— A NEW DIRECTION —

Whether you’ve been following Hit Like A Girl since we began in 2012 or just for the past few months, it’s impossible not to have noticed that there are more girls, women and non-binary drummers and percussionists playing, teaching, supporting and actively participating in drumming today than ever before.

And, from a historical, social, musical and commercial perspective, the growing quantity, quality and diversity of the female community has been one of the biggest and most important changes in drumming in the 21st Century.

While they certainly can’t take all the credit for these developments, it is fair to say that the Hit Like A Girl contest has played a significant part in what has become a worldwide movement.

Earlier this year Hit Like A Girl Directors and International Ambassadors held a series of meetings to evaluate their progress and set a course for the future. They came to 2 major conclusions: 1) Although it is one way to build a community, a contest is not the only way to reach that goal, and 2) Female drumming has grown and Hit Like A Girl needs to grow with it.

In other words, while the Hit Like A Girl contest got them headed in the right direction, in order to sustain the organization and optimize its impact, it’s time for a new direction.

Therefore, the Hit Like A Girl executive board has established the following goals for 2024:

• Continued advocacy and support for the global growth of female drummers.

• Reallocation of resources for new projects and maximum impact.

• Decentralization of the organization to facilitate greater activation of the community around the world.

• Increased funding through sponsorships, grants, gifts and donations.

To meet these goals, they have adopted the following action plan for the next 12 months:

• Transition to an every-other-year cycle for the HLAG contest (meaning no international contest in 2024).

• Organize and promote a series of Mini-Contests throughout the year.

• Expand Local and Regional Ambassador programs and activities (contests, festivals, residencies, summits, etc.).

• Establish/Strengthen alliances with companies, organizations and events that support and benefit from our mission.

• Rebrand the HLAG website and social pages as www.hit-like-a-girl.org

Hit Like A Girl recognizes that some of these changes, like not having a contest next year, may be surprising or even a bit controversial. However, they feel that these adjustments are necessary to allow them to continue to serve their expanding mission— and our ever-expanding community— in the coming months and years.

Hit Like A Girl would like to thank the many companies and individuals that have so generously contributed to Hit Like A Girl in the past who’s continued support remains essential to their continued success.
