In Memoriam: Dom Famularo, Drumming’s Global Ambassador

Unbelievably sad news has struck the drumming world. Dom Famularo, the Global Drum Ambassador, has passed away after a long and valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. His departure leaves a void in the hearts of countless musicians and music enthusiasts worldwide. Dom’s brand of positivity and boundless kindness made it impossible not to share in his infectious enthusiasm.

Dom Famularo was born on Long Island, New York, and his journey into the world of drumming began at the tender age of 11. Remarkably, by the time he turned 12, he had already become a professional drummer. He honed his craft by studying under some of the greatest drummers of the 20th century, including the legendary Jim Chapin and Joe Morello. With an unwavering passion for jazz and an innate gift for inspiring others, Dom embarked on a successful career as a drumming instructor, ultimately becoming one of the most sought-after clinicians of his era. Many of the world’s most accomplished jazz and rock drummers sought his guidance and mentorship.

Dom earned the title “Drumming’s Global Ambassador” due to his extensive travels and the countless individuals who were fortunate enough to hear him speak each year. He was renowned for his open-handed playing style and holds the distinction of being the first Western drummer to conduct clinics in China, a testament to his dedication to spreading the art of drumming worldwide.

Throughout his illustrious career, Dom presented masterclasses and clinics across the globe, leaving an indelible mark on aspiring drummers in countries spanning the continents. From the United States to Asia, from Europe to Africa, he touched the lives of drumming enthusiasts in over 50 countries.

Dom Famularo was not only a gifted drummer but also an author and motivational speaker. His book “Cycle of Self-Empowerment” stands as a testament to his commitment to inspiring personal growth and self-belief. His impact on the drumming community was further recognized when he was voted Best Clinician by the readers of Modern Drummer magazine in 2005 and 2006, as well as by the readers of DRUM! in 2006.
