On January 7, 2020, Canada lost one of its greatest musical icons. Neil Peart, legendary drummer and lyricist for RUSH, passed away after a battle with glioblastoma.
Known as “The Professor,” Peart was widely regarded as one of the greatest drummers in music history. In 2016, Rolling Stone ranked him fourth on its list of the 100 Greatest Drummers of All Time.
His achievements went far beyond the drum kit. Peart and his RUSH bandmates, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013, appointed Officers of the Order of Canada in 1996, and inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.
But Peart’s legacy isn’t measured only by awards. Through RUSH’s music and his powerful lyrics, he inspired generations of fans and musicians around the world while proudly representing Canada on the global stage.
Why Neil Peart?
The Bank of Canada has been looking for a new iconic Canadian to appear on the $5 bill. What better choice than a man whose talent, creativity, and influence helped define Canadian rock?
Putting Neil Peart on the $5 would celebrate not only an extraordinary musician, but a Canadian cultural icon whose work continues to inspire people around the world.
Following his passing, fans launched a petition calling for Peart to be featured on Canada’s $5 bill. While he is not currently on Canadian currency, the campaign continues to give fans a voice.
We here at Classic Rock 98.1 in London, Ontario, believe Neil Peart deserves that recognition.
He inspired generations. He helped put Canadian rock on the world stage. And his legacy will live on for generations to come.
It’s time to put The Professor where he belongs.
