Canopus Celibrates 30th Anniversary With Re-Release Of The Zelkova Snare Drum

Latest Drum News

We are pleased to announce that CANOPUS flagship snare drums and zelco bass snare drums have been patronized by everyone and are celebrating their 30th anniversary.

To commemorate this, we have decided to sell the 30th anniversary model of the Zelco Bus Snare Drum HS-1465 for a limited time.

It is a gem that uses gold color parts with deep black that imaged lacquer and pure gold embedded in the conduit (heather).

  • Limited to one year in 2016 Made to order.
  • Excellent sound not found in plywood.

The veneer hollow body snare is characterized by a thick core and a high-impact sound. It also boasts a wide tuning range that is unthinkable with a plywood snare.

It can be said that these are the major factors that make the Zelco bass snare drum popular with the world’s top drummers.

Development of the Zelkova snare drum, which became the basic policy of Canopus Zelkova (zelkova).

Canopus’ flagship model, the hollowed-out body of the Zelkova snare drum, was our first original drum and is still favored by drummers around the world.

In developing it, we initially applied traditional 45 degree edge processing to both the inside and outside angles. However, the sound was far from the sound imagined from the so-called veneer body, and it was very unresponsive with no body ringing.

Therefore, we have made various edge shapes such as 70 degrees, 60 degrees, and 30 degrees and made improvements. Among them, we have completed a completely new type of edge shape that has the maximum body ringing, delicacy, and thickness of sound, and realizes an unparalleled rise. This edge shape was a very sharp shape that overturned the theory so far. [See the figure to the right]

What we have learned in the development of the Zelkova snare drum is that the edge shape for maximizing the shell’s capabilities is determined by various factors such as the material and thickness of the body and whether it is veneer or plywood. The traditional edge shape was not universal.

Much of what we learned from this was the source of Canopus’s underlying policy, and when embarking on the development of drums and accessories, he said that he would fundamentally question the theory of drum making that is now accepted as common sense. I decided the posture.

Overcome the fragility of the “veneer hollow body”

For a veneer drum, the cylindrical shape of the drum shell is destined to be extremely fragile. Therefore, we adopted a new construction method to complete the snare drum with a complete veneer body. The answer lies in the force vector.

The force Fn (Newton) applied from the vertical direction to the curved surface is divided into f1, f2, and f3 in a plane as shown in Fig. 1, and f1 and f2 escape in a straight line, but f3 breaks the curvature. It will be the power to do. On the other hand, the snare drum shell devised by our company has a spherical body, and as shown in Fig. 2, it disperses the force from the vertical direction in a myriad of curved lines, so it is much stronger than the curved surface and produces a result that is hard to break. rice field.

In addition, it took about 3 years to dry the shell, and the water content was brought up to 9% with a special dryer, so we succeeded in minimizing the shrinkage and cracking of the body.

World-rare “Veneer hollow body” Zelkova (zelkova)

For example, if you hit a piece of plywood and a piece of veneer like a clapping tree, everyone knows that the clapping tree sounds better. In other words, the vibrating object is composed of a single element, which is important for bringing out the sound of nature. So why are most of the drums currently in production made of plywood?

This is because the veneer hollow drum has the drawback of being extremely fragile due to its structure.

Plywood can be several times stronger than veneer by laminating multiple trees with a large amount of adhesive. However, on the other hand, the sound of nature is inevitably sacrificed.

Drum makers around the world have tried different approaches to match this single element with the conflicting proposition of strength. For example, the block method is closer to a veneer, or the maple veneer is bent to make a shell as represented by Slingerland’s Radio King snare, and reinforcement is applied to the inside to maintain strength.

The veneer hollow body is ideal in terms of bringing out the original sound of wood, but deformation and cracking become a manufacturing problem due to aging, and there are only a few manufacturers in the world that are mass-producing.

About the air hole of the zelco bass snare drum

Air vent fittings are not attached to the Zelcova snare drum.

The Zelkova snare drum has a special structure called a “hollow body”. Zelkova, a natural material, constantly breathes and contracts depending on temperature and humidity, trying to maintain its best condition. Interfering with these activities puts extra pressure on the shell itself and can cause a variety of harms. Even with just one air vent metal fitting, I didn’t dare to attach the metal fitting because I wanted to reduce the stress on the shell.

Only the oil finish is applied to the through hole, so you can check the cross section of the zelco bass snare.

Equipped with a rotary height adjustment lug. Zelkova snare height adjustment lug.

The Canopus flagship model, the Zelco Bus Snare Drum, which has gained tremendous support since its release, is now equipped with a tube lug with variable lug height as standard equipment.

The Zelkova snare drum is a completely hollow veneer snare that is created by hollowing out a zelkova drum that is about 200 years old. After a natural drying period of 3 years, the water content is adjusted to 9% at the time of shipment by a special dryer, but the wooden body is constantly shrinking and expanding due to the influence of external humidity. The higher the humidity, the longer the diameter of the torso, and the lower the humidity, the shorter the diameter. Since a general lug has a structure with a “navel” (swivel) that receives tension bolts, there is no problem even if there is contraction and expansion of the body, but the Canopus tube lug is a solid structure that enhances the vibration circulation efficiency of the drum. Therefore, the “navel” is not attached. Therefore, if the torso contracts and expands, there may be a problem when attaching the tension bolt.
