Help Drum Writer (Modern Drummer) Robyn Flans Get Back on Her Feet

Latest Drum News

Writer and former Modern Drummer contributor Scott K Fish has a blog at www.ScottFish.com where he focuses on drum related posts.  It a site you should check out.

Recently he posted about his friend Roby Flans who is in need of help.  He writes: Robyn Flans is a dear friend, a writer who has helped chronicle the history of modern drummers. She will be familiar to MD readers and to those who have read her recent bio of Jeff Porcaro. Thank you for helping Robyn reach her goal.”

Robyn has a “GoFundMe” page, the pages description is: Hello. I know it’s the holidays and we’ve all been through a couple of very tough years. Last year was my very hardest year on this planet. I nearly lost someone I love. This holiday season I am so very grateful that I didn’t. (For obvious reasons I will protect their privacy.) Western medicine failed this person when they were diagnosed with a rare neurological condition and told it was incurable. So we had to think outside the box. Of course that meant traveling and that insurance was not going to cover those costs or even the medical bills.

This left me penniless and in overwhelming debt, but it left this person with a life to live and hope going forward. I have struggled and struggled with doing a Go Fund Me, but it’s at a point where I simply don’t know what else to do. I know these are hard times for all of us, so all I am asking is for those of my FB friends who are able to donate just $10, I would be able to pay these medical bills in addition to my monthly bills and I could get back on my feet. I cannot thank you enough and wish you the most wonderful Thanksgiving. I have so much to be thankful for! “

Please consider giving even $10.

Scott recently reviewed Robyn’s Jeff  Pocaro book “It’s About Time Jeff Porcaro The Man And His Music”.  Below is his review:

SKF NOTE: Last night I finished reading Robyn Flans’s book, Jeff Porcaro – It’s About Time: The Man and His Music. Robyn and I first met in the 1980s when I was Managing Editor of Modern Drummer and she was one of MD‘s prolific freelance writers. I remember from conversations with Robyn during those years how much she liked Jeff Porcaro as a person and drummer.

Her book, then, is exactly what Robyn said it is. It’s a biography of Jeff Porcaro as a human being and the music he created. Other than a glossy insert with Jeff’s handwritten drum part for Toto’s song, Rosanna, this biography stays mercifully clear of music notations. Several times Jeff uses words to describe drum parts or concepts. But this book is not written for someone primarily looking to learn Jeff’s licks.

Robyn Flans is close to the Porcaro family. That’s clear throughout this book. That familial relationship with Jeff, his family and friends really works to Robyn’s benefit as a writer, and to our benefit as readers. The people interviewed here trust Robyn. For an interviewer that makes all the difference in the world.

I didn’t know Jeff Porcaro. While he was not a drummer I followed, I recognized myself in Robyn’s book as one more person, on a long list, drawn to Jeff’s drumming whenever it comes around.

So, thank you, Robyn, for this book. It’s a good read sure to stand the test of time.
