August Burns Red drummer Matt Greiner developed with Zildjian a unique cymbal. Now, the Blast Bell, created by Greiner in collaboration with Zildjian, is available directly through his website—and each one comes personally signed by Matt.
Fans of August Burns Red will likely recognize the distinctive sound immediately. Greiner and Zildjian first developed the Blast Bell a little over ten years ago, creating an instrument designed to deliver the powerful, cutting tone that has become a recognizable part of his drumming.
There’s a personal connection to the Blast Bell that makes the story even more special.
To achieve the unique look of each Blast Bell, the cymbals are tumbled using corn cobs. Greiner had no idea that the person helping bring his cymbal to a wider audience also happened to be a corn farmer.
When he discovered the connection, even Matt couldn’t believe the coincidence.
For Greiner, the connection between the two worlds is especially meaningful. Drumming and farming are two things he loves, and the Blast Bell has unexpectedly brought those passions together.
“He did not know I was a corn farmer at the time, and when he found out, he couldn’t believe it. I still can’t believe the coincidence between the two things that I love the most (drumming and farming). This is a dream come true for me.”
The Blast Bell is more than just another piece of percussion gear. It represents years of development, a collaboration between an artist and one of the most respected names in cymbal manufacturing, and a surprisingly personal connection between music and agriculture.
For Greiner, it’s a dream that has been more than ten years in the making. And for a small music store with the opportunity to help bring his creation to drummers everywhere, it’s a privilege to be part of the journey.
