Drumming News :
The Chad Smith Foundation and the University of Minnesota have announced a new partnership to expand access to music education through the newly created Curtis & Joan Smith Scholarship, named in honor of Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith’s parents — both proud UMN alumni.
The scholarship will support students entering the University of Minnesota School of Music, with a focus on those who have come through Minnesota’s nonprofit community music programs, particularly students from underserved and underrepresented communities.
To celebrate the partnership, a Meet & Greet Luncheon featuring Chad Smith will be held on Saturday, October 11. The sold-out event includes remarks from university and foundation leadership, a live performance featuring Smith and student musicians, and elevated tailgate fare. All proceeds benefit the scholarship fund.
Although luncheon tickets are no longer available, fans can still catch Chad Smith live that evening during a special halftime performance with the University of Minnesota Marching Band at the Homecoming football game against Purdue at Huntington Bank Stadium.
A Twin Cities native, Smith reflected on the personal meaning behind this initiative:
“The University of Minnesota gave my parents the foundation to build a life and support our family, which allowed me to pursue my musical dream,” said Smith. “To launch our foundation’s first-ever scholarship at my parents’ alma mater is a huge honor.”
Proceeds from the luncheon and future fundraising efforts will continue to support the Curtis & Joan Smith Scholarship, helping shape the next generation of musicians.
