Questlove needs our help in finding Ellie…

Questlove (a.k.a Ahmir Khalib Thompson) producer, music journalist, DJ, as well as drumming front man for the Roots who are the house band for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and all around music lover is trying to find the woman that started his record collection.

On October 24th he took to Facebook sharing a fantastic story about the early days of his musical journey. A child of musical parents he writes “My era was pre babysitters (an 80s thing) in my day you went to work or you became part of the act. I’d sit in the nightclub as a 5-year-old while my parents did their 2 sets.”

Being a cute kid, he talked an older woman into buying him a stereo and record collection, she asked him what he’d liked and Questlove replied ““records” she asked “what type of records?” I just named songs of the day I liked: “Bad Blood” by Sedaka, “Dance With Me” by Rufus was a jam. And being a Jackson Five fan was as common as oxygen.”

The image shows a handwritten note on a napkin on (May 25th, 1976) of what Questlove (Ahmir) was looking for.  She showed up the next day with the records and stereo.

The woman’s name is Ellie, Questlove writes: “on the off chance someone in Portland Maine knows of a kind woman who in 1976 randomly purchased a turntable & 3 records for this lil black kid w an afro the size of Texas named Ellie….”
