Charlie Benante Takes Temporary Break From Touring; Darby Todd Steps In Behind the Kit

Drumming News :

Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante will be taking a temporary break from touring after suffering an injury to his right hand, prompting UK-based drummer Darby Todd to step in for a series of upcoming live dates.

Benante shared the news with fans in a statement, explaining that the decision was made following medical advice to allow the injury adequate time to heal.

I wanted to let everyone know that I unfortunately injured my right hand and, following my doctor’s orders, I’ll be sitting out a handful of shows from June 20 through July 4 to give it the proper time to heal. I’m incredibly grateful that Darby Todd will be stepping in behind the kit for these dates and helping keep the shows rolling while I recover. I’m already focused on getting healthy and look forward to being back on the road soon. Thank you all for the support and understanding.

While disappointing for fans, this is not the first time Benante has been forced to step away from the stage due to physical strain or injury.

In 2021, the veteran drummer opened up about his long battle with carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition that had impacted his playing for years before he eventually underwent surgery and recovery. The procedure helped alleviate ongoing issues and allowed him to return to performing.

Earlier, in 2012, Benante missed several festival appearances during the Mayhem Festival tour after suffering a minor hand injury. During that period, drummer Jason Bittner temporarily filled in behind the kit while Benante recovered.

Stepping into the role this time is Darby Todd, one of the UK’s most respected and versatile drummers. Known for his ability to seamlessly navigate a wide range of musical styles, Todd has built a reputation as a highly sought-after performer and session musician.

Currently touring internationally with Devin Townsend, Todd has earned praise for his technical ability, musicality, and energetic live performances. His experience across multiple genres makes him a natural choice to keep the rhythm section firing while Benante focuses on recovery.

Although Benante’s absence will be felt, fans can take comfort in knowing that the drummer expects to return soon and is already concentrating on getting back to full health. With Todd handling drumming duties through early July, the scheduled shows will continue as planned while one of metal’s most celebrated drummers takes the time needed to recover.
