After 50 years of performing, St. John’s drummer Paul “Boomer” Stamp is facing a difficult new chapter as he battles cancer.
Stamp is well known for his work with The Wonderful Grand Band, The Irish Descendants, Ron Hynes and Spirit of Newfoundland Productions. Throughout his career, he has inspired generations of musicians and become a respected figure in Newfoundland and Labrador’s music community.
Now, longtime friends and fellow musicians Paul Kinsman, Sandy Morris, Barry Canning and Cory Tetford are rallying behind him. A GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $58,000 to help Stamp with medical expenses, medications and other costs associated with his treatment.
Stamp began experiencing problems with his voice earlier this year. Doctors discovered that cancer was affecting his laryngeal nerve, which controls his vocal cords. Since January, he has been unable to speak above a whisper.
Without health insurance and with his income dependent on live performances, the diagnosis creates significant financial challenges. Despite this, Stamp remains determined to continue playing the shows he has booked.
For those who know him, that determination is typical of Boomer. After decades of giving his talent and time to the local music scene, his friends believe it is now time for the community to give back.
