In the heart of the musical universe, where legends collide and sonic landscapes are painted in bold strokes, Dave Grohl took center stage at Warren Haynes’ 20th Annual Christmas Jam in 2018, delivering an unforgettable 36-minute live rendition of his instrumental masterpiece, ‘Play.’

Captured at the prestigious Christmas Jam, Grohl, the maestro behind the kit, brought to life the intricate layers of ‘Play,’ a composition that originally emerged from the hallowed grounds of Foo Fighter’s Studio 606. A celebration of the devotion and challenges inherent in the pursuit of musical mastery, ‘Play’ is a testament to Grohl’s insatiable hunger for musical exploration.

Recognizing the demands of translating a solo studio endeavor into a live spectacle, Grohl enlisted a dream team of collaborators. Greg Kurstin, the virtuoso producer known for his work with Foo Fighters, Liam Gallagher, and Adele, lent his talents on keys. Bassist extraordinaire Chris Chaney (NHC, Jane’s Addiction, Alanis Morrissette, Slash) provided the backbone, while the guitars were skillfully handled by Alain Johannes (Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, Eleven), Jason Falkner (Jellyfish, Beck), and recording engineer Barrett Jones, a longtime compatriot from Grohl’s formative years.

Adding to the rhythmic tapestry, percussionist Drew Hester and the enigmatic Abbey ‘The Spoon Lady’ Roach, a street performer hailing from Asheville, North Carolina, graced the stage. The eclectic ensemble breathed new life into ‘Play,’ transforming it into a live journey that transcended the boundaries of time and space.

In the accompanying video for ‘Play,’ Grohl expressed his deep-seated passion for musical discovery. “To any musician young or old, a studio full of instruments is like a playground,” Grohl declared. “It’s always going to be a puzzle, it’s always going to be a challenge. It’s a beautiful mystery, but once it gets its hooks in you, that’s when the obsession and the drive really kick in.”

As Warren Haynes’ annual Christmas Jam gears up for another edition, the live version of ‘Play’ is set to be unleashed as part of the star-studded compilation, ‘Warren Haynes Presents: The Benefit Concert Volume 20.’ Scheduled for release on December 8, the CD/DVD version is still pre-order, this collection promises performances from luminaries such as Joe Bonamassa, Eric Church, Jim James, Gov’t Mule, and more.

The Christmas Jam, a tradition dating back to 1988, not only celebrates the magic of music but also serves a greater purpose. With over $2.8 million raised for the Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity and the construction of more than 50 homes, the event stands as a testament to the transformative power of music and community.

Grohl’s 36-minute opus, an immersive sonic journey, will undoubtedly be a highlight of this musical extravaganza. Pre-order your piece of history and prepare to be swept away by the relentless energy and passion of Dave Grohl and his stellar ensemble.
