In a unique and heartfelt gesture, AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd is set to part ways with a treasure trove of rock memorabilia in a garage sale that transcends the typical yard sale fare. Rudd, a legendary figure in the world of rock ‘n’ roll, is auctioning off items spanning his illustrious career with AC/DC, with all proceeds dedicated to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.
The decision to sell his cherished possessions is a poignant response to the impending loss of his close friend Toni Wilson, who battles terminal stage 4 breast cancer. Given a mere six months to live, Wilson’s struggle has deeply affected Rudd, who emphasizes the inability of wealth to buy precious time.
Rudd’s collection, amassed over nearly five decades, includes iconic drum kits, awards, and items linked to AC/DC’s meteoric rise from an Aussie pub band to global stardom. Notorious for his rock star lifestyle, Rudd’s life has been a rollercoaster of success and challenges, including legal troubles, addiction battles, and a heart attack.
The decision to part with his AC/DC memorabilia is Rudd’s attempt to make a positive impact amid personal adversity. The sale, slated before Christmas, will feature items such as a drum kit, sports car, and drumsticks used in famous AC/DC tracks. The rock drummer’s commitment to the cause is further highlighted by his decision to paint his garages bright pink in support of breast cancer awareness.
Breast Cancer Foundation NZ’s Chief Executive, Ah-Leen Rayner, commended Rudd’s unique contribution, emphasizing the impact of breast cancer on thousands of lives. Rudd’s generous donation is expected to aid the foundation’s mission towards zero deaths from breast cancer.
