Porter, one of the “rising stars” of the contemporary percussion scene, explains in an interview in the current issue of STICKS – Drums & Percussion how she set pictures of her grandfather to music for her solo debut.

On her debut solo album “cycle.sound.color”, Vanessa Porter set abstract paintings by her grandfather David Porter to music. As part of this comprehensive project, ten images were or are being presented on Stuttgart advertising pillars, city light pillars in underground and suburban trains and on a dedicated website. Passers-by could listen to the music composed for this purpose on their smartphones using a QR code. Vanessa Porter has been attracting attention in the percussion duo with her sister Jessica for around ten years. In the meantime, however, she is also on the road as a soloist, which she talks about in the interview in issue 1/2023.

On the stages of the world:

Vanessa Porter, born in Laupheim in 1992, is one of the most versatile percussionists internationally inside. After studying at the Royal College of Music in London and the Music Academy in Lübeck Porter completed her master’s degree at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart. In 2009 she formed the “PorterPercussionDuo” with her sister Jessica. As a soloist, she combines current works with improvisation, electronics and performing arts and works with well-known composers such as Georges Aperghis, Simon Steen-Anderson, Zeynep Gedizlioglu and Jennifer Walshe. With her solo programs she has made guest appearances at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and the Barbican Center London, among others.
