Drumming News :
Salt City Drums, a well-known fixture in Utah’s music community, has announced it will be closing its doors after decades in business. The announcement came via a Facebook post in March 2026, where the store cited increasingly unsustainable business conditions as the primary reason for the decision.
In its message, the company pointed to broader economic pressures, including tariffs and the challenges of staying profitable in a market that has largely “outsourced for a profit.” These factors, the post suggested, have made it increasingly difficult for independent music retailers to compete and survive.
“We’ve made the difficult decision to close our doors,” the statement read.

The closure marks the end of an era for local musicians who have long relied on Salt City Drums not just as a retail shop, but as a community hub. Over the years, the store built a reputation for its curated selection of new, used, and vintage drum gear, as well as its knowledgeable staff and commitment to supporting local artists.
In its farewell message, the company expressed gratitude to its customers and the broader music community:
“We are deeply grateful for the support of our customers, friends, and the local music community. It has been an honor to serve you throughout the years.”
As part of the closure, Salt City Drums launched a storewide closing sale, encouraging customers to stop by one last time. The sale, which included all inventory—from used and vintage pieces to new gear—ran through Saturday, March 28.
“Store Closing Sale Now in Progress. All inventory must go,” the announcement noted.
The shutdown of Salt City Drums reflects a broader trend affecting small, independent music retailers across the country. As global supply chains shift and large-scale competitors dominate pricing, many local shops are finding it harder to maintain margins while preserving the personalized service that once set them apart.
It’s sad to see yet another drum store shutting it’s doors.
