Pearl has introduced a striking new addition to its Masterworks lineup with the Masterworks Z-Type Oak w/Mappa Burl snare drum. While the model is exclusively available in Japan, international drummers may still be able to purchase one through Japanese music retailers that offer worldwide shipping. The drum is priced at approximately $1,400 USD, based on current exchange rates and has been available on Reverb in the US.
The limited-edition snare pays tribute to Pearl’s iconic Zenithal Resonator (“Z”) Series from the 1980s and 1990s, updating the classic design with modern Masterworks craftsmanship. Instead of the maple shells used on the original Z models, this version features an 8-ply, 10mm Oak shell with a beautiful Mappa Burl outer veneer, delivering a rich, powerful voice while showcasing an elegant natural wood grain.
Pearl finishes the drum in its vintage-inspired Champagne Lacquer, one of the signature colors associated with the original Z series. Complementing the finish is a full set of nickel-plated hardware, giving the drum a refined, understated appearance that highlights the figured Mappa Burl.
Performance was also a priority in the design. The snare utilizes an Outer 60-degree bearing edge for enhanced articulation and projection, while Pearl’s AIR vent, positioned using the golden ratio, is designed to optimize resonance, sensitivity, and overall response.
The Masterworks Z-Type is available in two sizes—14″ x 5″ and 14″ x 6.5″—making it suitable for a wide range of playing styles. The featured 14″ x 6.5″ model includes MasterCast hoops with 10 lugs, Classic Lugs, an SR-017 strainer, SN-1420I snare wires, and Remo coated batter and snare-side heads, creating a premium package worthy of the Masterworks name.
