Drumming News :
Earlier this month Ally Hall for Australia’s “The Western Weekender” wrote an article about Andrew Hewitt who was born with cerebral palsy but that didn’t get in the way of his love for drumming.
Andrew Hewitt’s story is one of persistence, passion, and proving people wrong. What began as a drum set his parents expected would “gather dust” turned into a lifelong dedication to music. Living with cerebral palsy, he refused to be limited, saying, “Having a disability… makes me go and do it anyway to prove everyone wrong.”
Drumming became both his escape and identity: “I’m in my own world and my disability is irrelevant.” His commitment has taken him internationally, performing in the U.S. and Germany and gaining recognition in music magazines.
Now, Hewitt mentors others, especially musicians with disabilities, focusing on creativity over technical reading: “I teach people to play with the song rather than… read from sheets.” Despite ongoing barriers, he continues to push for change, co-founding Can-Do Musos to support artists worldwide and emphasize that “talent comes before disability.”
