Former Modern Drummer editor/writer Scott K Fish writes about who sparked his love of drums

One of the topics that are the most interesting are that of a drummer’s initial experience to drumming that got them hooked on the love of drumming. This post captures a discussion of what every drummer has at one point or another, that of their opinion of who the “world’s greatest drummer is”.

This recollection is written by Scott K Fish on the Scott k Fish blog. Mr. Fish is the former Managing Editor of Modern Drummer magazine (1980-1983). Fish started writing for MD in 1977. As Modern Drummer‘s managing editor, he was liaison among the magazine and its freelance writers and photographers. He was also a major content contributor to MD. When Fish left MD in 1983 he had written almost 50-percent of the magazine’s feature stories.

Fish’s feature interviews with MD included Max Roach, Mel Lewis, Neil Peart, Charlie Watts, Bill Bruford, Gary Chester, Joe Morello, Freddie Gruber, Roy Haynes, Paul T. Riddle, Butch Trucks & Jaimo, Shiela E, Paul Motian, Jim Keltner, Alan Dawson, Dave Weckl, Max Weinberg, Teri Lyn Carrington and Ed Blackwell. He also wrote a five-part MD feature series, The History of Rock Drumming. As well as being a political advocate Scott currently writes a weekly newspaper column for Maine’s Piscataquis Observer.

In this post Scott recounts when his uncle said who the “worlds Greatest Drummer’ is.

Here is an excerpt from that post:

“My Uncle Bob sparked my lifelong love of all things drums. And one vivid recollection of Uncle Bob, probably in the late 1950s or early 1960s (he died when I was age 14) is him telling my brother Craig and me, “The world’s greatest drummer is Louis Bellson.”

Yeah, I know “the world’s greatest drummer” designation is arguable, but I remembered Louie’s name.”
