Drumming News :
New 14″ × 7″ walnut/birch snare drum designed to deliver a focused, low-centered sound that supports the musical balance of the ensemble.
Canopus Drums has announced the BA-1470, the first model in its new Baritone Series of snare drums. Featuring a 14″ × 7″ hybrid walnut/birch shell, the BA-1470 is designed to explore the musical potential of the mid-to-low frequencies, offering drummers an alternative to the conventional emphasis on volume, projection, and cutting power.
The new model will be available beginning October 15, 2026.
A Different Approach to the Snare Drum
The concept behind the Baritone Series draws inspiration from the role of the baritone register in vocals and instruments such as the saxophone. While higher registers add color and definition, the baritone often provides depth, balance, and a strong musical foundation.
Canopus applies this principle to the snare drum, recognizing that the instrument’s role extends beyond simply cutting through a mix. In modern music, vocals, guitars, keyboards, horns, and other instruments can occupy a substantial amount of the midrange. A snare drum that competes aggressively in the same frequency space can compromise the presence and clarity of those elements.
Instead, the BA-1470 is designed to complement the ensemble by supporting its musical center of gravity. Its goal is not merely to produce a lower-pitched snare sound, but to maintain a clear, confident presence while allowing vocals and other instruments to retain their definition.
Refined for Today’s Recording and Performance Environments
The BA-1470 builds on a concept Canopus previously explored with a limited-edition Baritone Snare. The new model revisits that philosophy in the context of contemporary music production, where home recording, video streaming, and playback monitoring allow drummers to evaluate their sound beyond the immediate experience behind the kit.
A snare drum that sounds powerful and satisfying in the room may occupy too much space in a recording. The Baritone Series addresses this challenge by prioritizing how the instrument contributes to the overall mix rather than focusing exclusively on how prominently it projects.
The result is an instrument developed around a specific musical purpose: delivering a substantial low-end foundation without sacrificing focus, articulation, or balance.
Walnut and Birch Hybrid Shell Construction
At the heart of the BA-1470 is a 10-ply, 8 mm walnut/birch shell. The combination brings together the mellow, dry character associated with walnut and the dark, low-centered qualities Canopus seeks from birch.
The shell is paired with Canopus’ proprietary bearing-edge design, developed to capture and focus the energy of a loosely tensioned drumhead. This construction aims to preserve a solid, defined low end, avoiding the loss of body and clarity that can occur when a snare drum is tuned down.
The BA-1470 also features 12-strand Vintage Snare Wire (CPSL-14DR12), intended to control excessive snare-wire rattle and vibration while retaining an articulate response. A two-ply CB14E Coated Heavy head comes fitted as standard, helping manage unwanted head resonance at lower tunings while taking advantage of the air volume provided by the 14″ × 7″ shell.
Together, these elements are designed to create a dense, controlled, and focused snare sound that integrates naturally into both live and recorded music.
The First Model in the Baritone Series
Canopus describes the Baritone Series as more than a collection of snare drums designed for low tuning. It represents a broader approach to the instrument’s role within an ensemble, emphasizing the musical value of the mid-to-low frequencies.
Rather than pushing forward in the upper frequencies, the BA-1470 is intended to reinforce the foundation of the music, support melodic elements, and help maintain a balanced overall sound. It is designed for players who value a snare drum that contributes to the mix without unnecessarily competing for attention.
With the BA-1470, Canopus brings its long-standing interest in the baritone concept into a new instrument shaped by the demands of modern performance and recording.
