Europe drummer Ian Haugland has brought a piece of his musical history back to life. Nearly 40 years after its original construction, his 1988 Yamaha 9000 Recording Custom drum kit has been fully restored and is ready to return to the road.
Haugland recently shared photos of the restored kit on social media, expressing his excitement about its return. The restoration was handled by Ola Bengtsson of 101 Drums, with custom airbrush artwork by Jörgen Nazenius.
According to Haugland, the results exceeded his expectations. The kit has been carefully restored to its former glory and packed into drum cases, ready for touring.
The Yamaha 9000 Recording Custom, also known as the YD-9000, is renowned for its all-birch shells and distinctive sound. Its design delivers a tight, focused tone with a punchy attack, making it a popular choice for studio recordings and live performances.
The original series features six-ply birch tom shells, seven-ply bass drum shells, 30-degree bearing edges and Yamaha’s distinctive high-tension lugs. These design elements help produce the kit’s characteristic warm, controlled sound.
With its restoration complete, Haugland’s vintage Yamaha kit is ready for another chapter. Nearly four decades after it was built, the drum set is returning to the stage, bringing its original craftsmanship and history back to live audiences.
