Earth, Wind & Fire Drummer John Paris Suffers Medical Emergency Before San Francisco Concert, GoFundMe Started

Drumming News :

Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris is the band member who suffered a medical emergency that forced the group to postpone its San Francisco concert, according to sources familiar with the situation.

The band had been scheduled to perform Thursday night at San Francisco’s Chase Center as part of Lionel Richie’s Sing a Song All Night Long Tour. The concert was postponed shortly before the performers were expected to take the stage.

Sources say none of Earth, Wind & Fire’s three longtime members — Philip Bailey, Verdine White and Ralph Johnson — were involved in the incident. The San Francisco Fire Department said emergency crews responded to the venue for a cardiac incident, with one person transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Paris’ current condition has not been publicly confirmed.

Paris’ wife, Kathy Merrick, later launched a GoFundMe campaign, saying that he was receiving medical care and was surrounded by family, friends and fans. The campaign had raised more than $67,000 toward its $75,000 goal as of publication.

Paris joined Earth, Wind & Fire in 2001 and has been part of countless performances with the legendary group. He also spent part of his youth in the Bay Area and has performed with artists including Sheila E. and Prince.

The unexpected medical crisis has also affected Merrick’s own touring schedule. She canceled the remaining performances of her tour with Honey Cone because of the need to travel and support Paris.

Earth, Wind & Fire’s other scheduled tour performances have continued, including recent shows in Palm Desert and Los Angeles. The group is also scheduled to perform near Sacramento on Sept. 15.

Chase Center said the postponed San Francisco concert will be rescheduled, with ticket holders eligible for either a refund or tickets to the new date. Representatives for Earth, Wind & Fire had not immediately provided additional comment.
