Drumming News
In a stunning turnaround, Zak Starkey has officially rejoined The Who—just days after being dismissed from the legendary rock band. The news follows a week of whirlwind developments and fan speculation surrounding the long-serving drummer’s abrupt departure.
As previously reported on April 18th, Starkey was let go following tensions that allegedly flared during The Who’s recent performance at London’s Royal Albert Hall for the Teenage Cancer Trust. The dismissal was said to stem from a disagreement between Starkey and frontman Roger Daltrey, which reportedly became evident on stage. The band initially issued a diplomatic statement, noting that the decision to part ways with Starkey was mutual and that they “have nothing but admiration for him.”
But in a move that has delighted fans and calmed the waters, guitarist and songwriter Pete Townshend took to social media to clear the air—and welcome Starkey back with open arms.
“News Flash! Who Backs Zak!” Townshend wrote. “He’s not being asked to step down from The Who.”
Townshend acknowledged that “communication issues, personal and private on all sides,” had caused confusion, but emphasized that they’ve now been “aired happily.” He also admitted his own challenges during the Royal Albert Hall shows, revealing he was still recovering from a full knee replacement. “Why did I ever think I could land on my knees?” he joked. “Wrong!”
He went on to clarify that the band asked Starkey to slightly adjust his “evolved drumming style” to better fit The Who’s non-orchestral setup—a request Starkey “readily agreed” to.
Zak Starkey, the son of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, has been a crucial part of The Who’s touring lineup since the mid-1990s, respected for both his lineage and his own ferocious talent behind the kit. His brief exit sent shockwaves through the fanbase, with many expressing dismay online.
While The Who’s inner dynamics have never been without drama, the quick reconciliation highlights the depth of the band’s personal and professional ties. With the lineup seemingly patched up and the energy rebalanced, fans can now look forward to the next chapter of a band that refuses to fade quietly into history.
Starkey is back, the show goes on—and rock ‘n’ roll, as always, finds a way.
Are you hoping to see them live this year?
