Drumming News :
In a rock ‘n’ roll world where legends collide, John Bonham and Alex Van Halen’s first meeting turned out to be more contentious than either drummer probably anticipated. During a recent interview, Jason Bonham, John’s son, shared a story about the heated exchange between the two drummers that took place in the late ‘70s.
While the Van Halen band was making a name for itself on the Sunset Strip, Alex Van Halen was eager to meet his idol, John Bonham. The two drummers’ paths crossed at The Rainbow, where Alex rushed over to introduce himself, only to be met by Bonham’s fist. According to Jason, “Alex kind of jumped over the [barrier] and went to put his hand out… And your dad took a swing at him!”
Years later, when Jason met Alex at the 1984 Donington Monsters of Rock festival, he didn’t get much of a warm reception. When he asked Van Halen’s bassist, Michael Anthony, why Alex was so cold, Anthony explained that the tension stemmed from the infamous encounter with Bonham: “We heard your dad was in the Rainbow… and Alex kind of jumped over the thing… and your dad took a swing at him!”
It’s unclear exactly why Bonham reacted that way, but it’s clear the animosity lingered. Jason’s experience with Alex was chilly, and it seems that the bad blood from their fathers’ first meeting may have carried over.
In the end, this clash between two iconic drummers reminds us that not all rock ‘n’ roll moments are born from harmony—sometimes, they’re the result of a little tension and a swinging fist.
