Vater has recently introduced a new brush model inspired by classic designs from decades past. The release draws directly from the company’s history: while sorting through cases that once belonged to Alan Vater’s grandfather, Jack Adams, several vintage brushes were discovered—originally made specifically for Adams during his time running Jack’s Drum Shop in Boston, where he also performed jazz and big band music.

The newly released Beantown Brush incorporates these historical elements into a modern tool. It features a .530″ grip that provides a lighter, faster feel, along with thinner-gauge wires that offer greater flexibility and a softer tonal response. These qualities help deliver the familiar “classic swish” associated with traditional jazz brushwork. The reddish-brown rubber grip pays tribute both to the vintage appearance of early brush designs and to Boston’s “Beantown” nickname, acknowledging the roots of the Vater family’s drumstick-making legacy in the basement of Jack’s Drum Shop.
Drummer Ulysses Owens Jr. has praised the Beantown Brush as the closest recreation he has found to his preferred classic model, highlighting its craftsmanship, feel, and authentic sound.
