Drumming News :
Last June, we shared the harrowing story of Lionel Duke, the 58-year-old drummer for Liverpool soul band The Christians, who collapsed on stage just two songs into their set at the On The Waterfront festival. The band was opening for Sting at the iconic Pier Head venue when Duke suffered a cardiac arrest, prompting an immediate medical emergency that brought the show to a halt.
Now, just weeks later, the BBC has posted a hopeful follow-up detailing Lionel’s ongoing recovery—and it’s nothing short of remarkable.
According to the update, Duke had to be placed in an induced coma after being rushed to Broadgreen Heart and Chest Hospital. His condition had left fans and bandmates anxiously waiting for news, with many sharing messages of support and positivity on social media.
A post on The Christians’ official Facebook page gave fans a first glimpse of Duke’s recovery. The photo shows frontman Garry Christian sitting beside Duke in intensive care. Alongside the image, the caption read: “Miracles do happen… Lionel, we love you, man.”
The heartwarming update has been met with relief and joy from fans, many of whom remember the band’s 1988 Top 10 hit—a soulful cover of the Isley Brothers’ Harvest for the World.
At the festival, medical professionals rushed to Duke’s aid within moments of his collapse, and their swift response was critical in stabilizing him before transport to the hospital. The band later paused all performances, focusing entirely on their friend and fellow musician’s recovery.
In the most recent update, Garry Christian wrote, “Look who I found in intensive care,” referring to the reunion with his bandmate—an image and moment that encapsulated the relief and gratitude felt by everyone who’s followed the story.
