GANAAN Looks to Advance Drum Harness Design After Patent Expiration

Drumming News :

With the expiration of key patents for the Percussion Instrument Carrier Assembly originally held by Randall May International Inc., new companies are beginning to explore updated versions of the modern drum harness.

Among them is GANAAN, founded by Garth Newlands, which hopes to launch its ErgoMount Drum Harness through a crowdfunding campaign. The company aims to raise about CAD$8,500 to begin production of the redesigned carrier for pipe band drummers.

The ErgoMount harness incorporates carbon fiber 3K twill or Kevlar weave tubing, making it lighter and stronger while offering customizable color options. Several structural components—including the belly plate, shoulder bars, and mounting adapters—have also been redesigned, reducing the number of parts from about 70 to 50.

The system features eight tool-free adjustment points using thumb cam levers, allowing drummers to quickly modify the fit during rehearsals or performances.

While the widely used Randall May JKP Snare Harness retails for around $750, GANAAN plans to sell the ErgoMount harness for roughly $550.

Newlands said crowdfunding is a practical way for a young company to bring new products to market. If funding is successful, the harness is expected to begin shipping in mid-2026.
