Drumming News
A music festival in Liverpool came to a sudden and heartbreaking standstill on Sunday night after The Christians’ drummer, Lionel Duke, collapsed on stage mid-performance. The 58-year-old suffered a cardiac arrest just two songs into the band’s set at the On The Waterfront festival, where they were opening for Sting at the iconic Pier Head venue.
Thousands of fans looked on in shock as Duke collapsed behind his drum kit, prompting frontman Garry Christian to urgently call for medical assistance. Festival medics responded swiftly, rushing on stage and erecting black privacy screens while emergency treatment was administered.
According to the band’s manager, Emma Roberts, Duke—described as a “very fit regular swimmer”—was taken to Liverpool’s Heart and Chest Hospital, where he underwent surgery and was placed into an induced coma.
“It was a huge shock,” Roberts said. “We never expected something like this. Lionel is incredibly active and healthy.”
Fans at the festival described the moment as “terrifying.” A sign was quickly displayed on stage reading, “We appreciate your understanding. Medical staff are with the performer, and we will provide an update as soon as we can.” Social media was soon flooded with messages of concern, support, and prayers for the beloved drummer.
“It was frightening to see,” wrote one fan on Facebook. “But everyone handled it with such professionalism and care. You could feel the love in the air.”
Another added, “The crowd was incredibly respectful. It really felt like Lionel had everyone’s support and love. The tribute Sting gave, ending his set with Fragile, was so moving. Such a bittersweet night.”
Despite the emotional toll of the incident, Sting went ahead with his headline performance at the request of The Christians, who gave their blessing. Addressing the crowd during his set, the former Police frontman assured fans, “The drummer in the band before is OK. He’s in hospital. All of us are praying he’s going to be fine. Our thoughts are with him.”
Sting’s performance was deeply emotional, closing the night with Fragile in tribute to Duke. The band later thanked him in a social media post for “his concern and beautiful tribute to Lionel.”
A spokesperson for The Christians addressed the crowd shortly after the incident: “We’re really hoping he is going to make it. He didn’t have a pulse. He’s got one now, we think. Thank you so much.”
Later that night, the band posted an update on Facebook:
“Thank you so much to all the many messages regarding our drummer Lionel Duke, who suffered a cardiac arrest while performing at tonight’s amazing concert ahead of Sting. We are awaiting news from the Heart and Chest Hospital at Broad Green and thank the phenomenal team of medics present from On The Waterfront Liverpool team who stepped in so swiftly to help our poor Lionel. Please send positive vibes his way.”
Formed in the 1980s, The Christians rose to fame with their soulful sound and politically conscious lyrics. Their self-titled debut album reached number two in the UK charts, and they remain a beloved band in Liverpool and beyond.
They were scheduled to perform their biggest hit, Harvest for the World, just before the tragedy struck.
As fans continue to send messages of support, the music community holds its breath for further updates on Duke’s condition. With Sting continuing his busy tour across Europe and into Asia and North America, the events in Liverpool have cast a somber tone over what should have been a night of celebration and music.
For now, the spotlight shines on the incredible medical teams, the professionalism of the artists, and the compassion shown by a crowd united in concern for one man’s life.
Our thoughts remain with Lionel Duke, his family, and the entire Christians band as they navigate this difficult time.
