Drummer, composer, and Grammy-winning producer Barrett Martin has built a remarkable career that bridges jazz, rock, and world music—all rooted in his Pacific Northwest upbringing. Though best known for his role in the grunge era, Martin’s musical journey began much earlier, with a player piano and his grandparents’ 78 rpm records spinning big band classics.
Martin first explored jazz in high school, playing with the Tumwater Thunderbird Jazz Ensemble and meeting legends like Cab Calloway and Freddie Green. Though his career would take him through Seattle’s grunge explosion, jazz and blues remained his foundation.
“The blues is the root of all great American music,” Martin explained in a KNKX interview. “Rock and roll just feels like the most electric way to feel it.”
His travels—from Senegal to South America—have deeply influenced his work. Collaborations with global musicians like Senegalese master drummer Thione Diop have added new textures to Martin’s compositions, especially through his jazz fusion project, the Barrett Martin Group.
Now based in Olympia, Washington, Martin continues to record, perform, and produce, proving that music—like travel—is a lifelong journey of connection and discovery.
