Drumming News :
Alex Van Halen has revealed that he is working on a new album alongside Toto guitarist Steve Lukather. The legendary drummer shared the news during a recent appearance on the Metal Sticks podcast, hosted by Iron Maiden’s Nicko McBrain, where he briefly discussed his current musical plans.

“I’m getting ready to do this record with Lukather and a couple of other people,” Van Halen said. “It should be exciting.” While details remain scarce, it is unclear whether the project will emerge as a new Van Halen release or a separate collaboration. Van Halen have not released a studio album since 2012’s A Different Kind Of Truth and have been inactive since the death of Eddie Van Halen in 2020.
Reports last year suggested that Alex and Lukather were working through a collection of unfinished recordings created by Alex and Eddie. The drummer has previously said that several albums’ worth of material remain in the band’s vaults, stressing that he wants to handle any release carefully and with respect to his brother’s legacy.
Lukather, a close friend and longtime collaborator of Eddie Van Halen, has clarified that his role is not to add new guitar parts, but to help curate and shape the existing material. For fans, the project represents a rare and promising glimpse into unheard music connected to one of rock’s most influential bands.
