Chester Thompson’s 1992 Genesis Sonor Signature Set Is Up For Sale

Drummer/Producer Uli Frost is selling the Sonor drum set used by Chester Thompson on the Genesis tour.  Uli is a favorite in the drumming community, he is also a music producer specializing in drum recording. Recording credits include Joe, Mike and Steve Porcaro, David Paich, Steve Lukather, Billy Cobham, and Chester Thompson.

The complete Genesis Tour-Drumset 1992 (The way we walk tour) with all Drums, original Drumheads, Hardware, Cymbals, Trigger systems including ADD 2 brain and cables plus all Microphones including the multicore system are for sale.
I. GENESIS Chester Thompson – Sonor Signature Special Edition A piece of music history.

1992:
Genesis started the „The way we walk tour“-Tour August 5th 1992. The tour was sponsored by Volkswagen and the TV Station „Premiere“broadcast the Knebworth Concert live on TV worldwide. Genesis released the live recording in every format including a tape cassette which came with the Volkswagen Polo Genesis – the first VW which was branded with a name of a band. Famous songs like „Home by the sea“, „I can ́t dance“, „Invisible touch“ and more were recorded live on the Sonor Signature special edition.

2009-2012:
Uli Frost (Drummer, Engineer, Sonor Drum Expert and founder of the Drums ́n ́Percussion Paderborn Festival and Drums ́n ́Percussion Belleville IL) started with Chester Thompson and Brad Marsh (Drumtec of Phil Collins) the project to reconstruct the original Drum Set as it was on stage. Frankfurt Musicfair exhibited the Drum set at the Vintage Show 2012 and later the world largest Computer Museum – The Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum – request the drum set for an exhibition.

Chester Thompson played „The way we walk tour“on the Sonor Signature Special Edition (SSE) including the Song „The Drum Thing“ composed by Phil Collins and Chester Thompson.

The Drum Set has still the original drum heads from the tour.

Chester Thompson retired the drum set after the “We way we walk tour“ and with this Chester Thompson retired the famous Sonor Bell Brass Snare Drum. He used this Snare on the Bee Gees “One for all Tour“ and the famous Berlin Live Concert „Phil Collins Live Serious Hits..Live“ Berlin 1990.

II. Technical

Drums:
Acording to Sonor is the Signature Series Special Edition for Chester Thompson a 1 of 1 kit. Sonor made only a few Signature Special Edition Sets. They are very rare. A 14 x 8 Snare reach up to 6000 US$. It is the only one kit which was made from 8“ till 18“ with PureCussion Rims (No Mount NM). The Drumset is a step beyond the original Signature Series. The Sonor Special Edition (SSE) has 12-ply maple shells and African Bubinga wood exterior finished in a high-gloss lacquer. Chester ́s kit has inside Canadian maple. All other Special Editions Sets were made mostly with Italian maple. Comparing to a regular Sonor Signature has the ply beech wood with Bubinga and without a high gloss Lacquer.

Also the Sonor Signature Special Edition metal parts are isolated from the shell using Sonor’s unique “APS” Advanced Projection System which Sonor transferred from HiLite to the SSE. Toms and floor toms are equipped with seamless Megahoops.

Chester Thompson used beyerdynamic mics. With the drum set is a multicore system and patch cable as it was on stage. The set includes the follow original mics including the modified LP-Mic-Claws:

Sabian-Cymbals:
Most of the cymbals are HH Line and AA Line. In the set-up is the Prototype of the Sabian Liquid Ride. Sabian reconstruct the cymbals as well because some of the cymbals were broken.

Kat Trigger in 4 Toms.

Dauz Pads including the cable pipe made by Brad Marsh. According to Chester Thompson he split the drum set in an acoustic drumset and in an electronic set for samples from the multi-track.

Below is a confirmation from Sonor (Karl-Heinz Menzel). Sonor quote the value of the drums itself 50.000 Euro. The 50.000 Euro is the value without Hardware, Cymbals, Trigger, DauzPads, Brain and Microphones.
