Rolling Stone interview series Unknown Legends features long-form conversations between senior writer Andy Greene and veteran musicians who have toured and recorded alongside icons for years, if not decades. All are renowned in the business, but some are less well known to the general public. Here, these artists tell their complete stories, giving an up-close look at life on music’s A list.

This time he features Phil Jones (born June 6, 1948) is an American drummer, percussionist, and record producer. Jones played percussion with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in the early 80’s both live and in the studio, while also playing drums and percussion on Tom Petty’s solo album Full Moon Fever, which included the hit songs “Free Fallin'”, “I Won’t Back Down”, and “Runnin’ Down a Dream”. His work outside the group includes playing on the Del Shannon albums; “Drop Down and Get Me” and “Rock On!”. He currently runs his own recording studio in Los Angeles called ‘Robust Recordings’.
