One of Fort Myers’ earliest pioneers and a Civil War veteran was honored during a special Memorial Day ceremony at the historic Old Fort Myers Cemetery.
Christian Henry “Dad” Funck began his military service at just 13 years old, serving as a Union Army drummer boy during the Civil War. Young musicians like Funck played an important role on the battlefield, using drumbeats to relay commands, signal troop movements, and boost morale during one of the nation’s most difficult periods.
After the war, Funck made Southwest Florida his home and became one of the early settlers who helped shape the growing Fort Myers community. He operated a neighborhood bakery for nearly five decades, earning the respect and admiration of generations of local residents. His life reflected both dedicated military service and a lasting commitment to the city he helped build.
During the Memorial Day ceremony, community members gathered to celebrate Funck’s remarkable journey from a young Union soldier to a respected local businessman and pioneer. The event included patriotic tributes, the playing of Taps, the presentation of flowers at his gravesite, and recognition of other Union veterans buried in the historic cemetery.
Organizers said the ceremony served as a meaningful reminder of the sacrifices made by veterans throughout the nation’s history. By honoring Christian “Dad” Funck and preserving his story, the community continued its tradition of remembering those who served and helped build Southwest Florida.
