Pink Floyd drummer and legendary car collector Nick Mason is selling one of the rarest McLarens ever built. His 1996 McLaren F1 GTR is expected to fetch more than $35 million when it crosses the block at RM Sotheby’s Monterey Car Week auction next month, potentially becoming the most expensive McLaren ever sold at public auction.
Chassis 10R is the first of just nine F1 GTRs built for the 1996 racing season. Originally retained by McLaren as its factory development and test car, it was driven by David Brabham during pre-qualifying for the 1996 24 Hours of Le Mans before being sold directly to Mason in 1999. McLaren later converted the former race car for road use.
Rather than hiding it away, Mason regularly drove and displayed the F1 GTR at events including Goodwood and the Festival of Speed. The car was restored by renowned McLaren specialist Lanzante after a journalist crashed it into a wheat field in 2009 and again following Mason’s own Goodwood accident in 2017.
With its factory racing pedigree, distinctive “Pop Art” livery, and single private owner since new, the F1 GTR is one of the most significant McLarens ever to come to market. RM Sotheby’s believes it will be one of the standout offerings of Monterey Car Week—and its final sale price could set a new record for the marque.
