Mike Browning, Morbid Angel and Nocturnus Co-Founder, Dies at 62

Drumming News :

Mike Browning, the influential drummer and vocalist who co-founded pioneering death metal bands Morbid Angel and Nocturnus, has died at the age of 62.

The news was confirmed on July 17 through an Instagram post by Profound Lore Records, the label behind Nocturnus A.D.’s most recent releases, Paradox (2019) and Unicursal (2024). The label paid tribute to Browning, writing: “RIP death metal legend/visionary and sci-fi death metal godfather Mike Browning of Nocturnus/Nocturnus AD. It has been an honour good sir. Now journey beyond the gateway to the outer void!”

Born on May 26, 1964, in Tampa, Florida, Browning began playing drums at the age of 13, honing his craft while playing along to records by Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. His passion for heavy music led him to guitarist Trey Azagthoth, and together they formed the first incarnation of Morbid Angel in 1983.

Browning handled both drums and lead vocals on the band’s debut recording, Abominations of Desolation. Although the 1986 sessions were shelved after the band became dissatisfied with the recordings, the album was eventually released in 1991 and has since become an important part of death metal history.

After leaving Morbid Angel in 1986, Browning briefly played with Florida death metal outfit Incubus before founding the progressive, sci-fi-inspired death metal band Nocturnus in 1987. The group’s landmark debut, The Key (1990), helped establish progressive death metal, followed by Thresholds in 1992. Browning later revived the project as Nocturnus A.D. in 2013, releasing Paradox and Unicursal before the band played its final live shows in 2024.

Beyond his work with Nocturnus A.D., Browning also performed alongside singer Lisa Lombardo in projects including After Death, Devine Essence, and Wolf and Hawk.

Morbid Angel paid tribute to their founding drummer on Instagram, writing, “R.I.P Mike. Thanks for helping making all this happen. Our condolences to his family & especially his daughter.”

Tributes have continued to pour in from across the metal community, with musicians remembering Browning not only as a pioneering force in extreme metal but also as a respected friend whose influence helped shape the genre for generations.
