Mapex continues to grow its acclaimed Black Panther snare drum lineup with the introduction of two distinctive new models—the Nemesis and Switchblade. While both are designed to deliver professional-level performance, each offers a unique sonic personality tailored to different playing styles and musical applications.
The Nemesis is a 14″ x 5.5″ snare built around a seven-ply hybrid shell of walnut and padauk, producing a warm, full-bodied tone with exceptional punch. Designed to strike with dark authority and relentless focus, the Walnut–Padauk–Walnut shell delivers a thick, commanding sound that excels in high-energy musical settings. Die-cast hoops enhance tuning stability while providing a focused attack that cuts effortlessly through any mix.
Adding to its impressive sonic character, the Nemesis features eight strategically placed Air Flow Venting holes that allow the shell to breathe more freely, increasing resonance, projection, and playing feel. The result is a snare that responds with power, clarity, and unwavering presence.
The Switchblade takes a different approach, offering a bright, articulate voice built for speed and sensitivity. Measuring 14″ x 5.5″, it features a six-ply American maple shell that delivers crisp articulation and a lively response. Retro-inspired single-flanged hoops allow the shell to resonate more freely, preserving its natural overtones for an open, vibrant sound that slices through the mix with exceptional clarity. Complementing its cutting tone is a striking Aegean Burl finish with an exotic burl veneer, giving the drum a bold visual presence to match its sonic character.
Like every Black Panther snare, both models incorporate several signature Mapex technologies. The SONIClear™ Bearing Edge allows the drumhead to sit flatter against the shell, creating better head-to-shell contact. This design delivers a stronger fundamental pitch, effortless tuning, and a significantly wider tuning range while maximizing shell vibration to reveal the full tonal complexity of each shell design.
The Air Flow Venting system further enhances both resonance and playing feel. Through extensive testing, Mapex determined the ideal number of vent holes for each Black Panther model, ensuring optimal airflow, projection, and shell response. The Nemesis utilizes eight vents for maximum breath and projection, while the Switchblade employs three vents to balance resonance with its quick, articulate attack.
Completing the package is the Cylinder-Drive Strainer, which utilizes a self-lubricating bearing for exceptionally smooth operation. Micro-lock adjustment knobs provide precise snare wire tension control, allowing drummers to dial in their preferred response with confidence and consistency.
