Unlike many other kick drum mics, this new addition to the DPA portfolio is a robust microphone solution that is not tailored to a specific sound.

According to the manufacturer DPA, the “DPA 4055” is designed in such a way that it withstands the stresses of everyday life on the stage and works just as well in the studio. It was specially developed for kick drum applications and offers the well-known sound of the Danish manufacturer, which stands for the real, clear sound of the instrument. The microphone also features a flat frequency response, both on and off axis, which is said to result in a very tight, natural and well-defined sound. According to the DPA, the low-end is more powerful and should really bring out the beater sound, whereby the strength of this microphone lies in the fact that it is easier than before to thin out the mid-range.

This new kick drum mic, DPA’s first, has the same characteristics as all of the Danish cardioid mics: a smooth on-axis frequency response and a very controlled, linear off-axis response. Thanks to this linear progression, according to DPA, the sound of the 4055 can be adapted and optimized for each genre. You can also hear the sound differences when the DPA 4055 is set up at different angles to the kick drum. Because it is a condenser microphone, it responds quickly and produces a clear and precise sound even at high sound pressure levels (up to 164 dB SPL).
